What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn real situations into numerical expressions using whole numbers, operations, and grouping symbols. They explain what each part represents and find the expression's value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can represent a situation with an expression such as 3 × (8 + 6). The student can explain each number and operation, then evaluate the expression accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write an equation when only an expression is needed, or place grouping symbols around the wrong quantities. They may also calculate strictly left to right instead of handling grouped operations first.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Three teams each collect 8 cans on Monday and 6 cans on Tuesday. Write one expression, evaluate it, and explain the grouping.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cups and counters, then have them build, write, and evaluate expressions for teacher-read collection stories.
Ask students to compare 4 × (7 + 2) and 4 × 7 + 2, then write situations that match each expression.
Create matching cards with situations, expressions, and values, then have pairs race to form correct sets.
Use a class party budget to write and evaluate expressions for equal snack bags plus shared supplies.
