What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn real situations into expressions using numbers, operation symbols, and grouping symbols. They explain what each part means and find the expression’s value using the correct operation order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes an expression that matches the quantities and relationships in a problem. The student evaluates it accurately and explains what each number and operation represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add an equal sign when only an expression is needed. They may work strictly left to right, ignore grouping symbols, or choose an operation that does not match the situation.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Each supply bag holds 8 pencils and 2 erasers. Write and evaluate an expression for the total items in 3 bags. Explain the parentheses.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 3 cups with 4 red and 2 blue counters in each, then have them write and evaluate a matching expression.
Ask students to write different stories for 3 × (4 + 2) and 3 × 4 + 2, then compare the meanings.
Use a card sort with situation cards, expression cards, and value cards, and have teams match each complete set.
Give students a simple snack menu and budget, then ask them to write and evaluate an expression for one group order.
