What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn the quantities and relationships in a situation into a numerical or variable expression. They also read an expression in words and explain each part in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write an expression that matches the order and meaning of the quantities in a situation. They can read it aloud and explain what each term and operation represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse operations, such as writing 20 − x when the situation means x − 20. They may treat a variable as a label, confuse 5x with 5 + x, or add an equal sign when none is needed.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A gym charges $8 per visit plus a one-time $15 fee. Write an expression for v visits and explain each term.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs price tags, play money, and variable cards; have them build an expression for buying x notebooks and paying a $3 fee.
Ask, “How are 5x + 2 and 5(x + 2) different in a ticket-buying story?” Students write and defend each interpretation.
Play expression match: students pair situation cards with expression cards, then explain why one tempting mismatch does not fit.
Use a snack-bar menu and ask students to model the cost of n sandwiches, two drinks, and a delivery charge.
