What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use exponents to represent repeated multiplication with integers, fractions, and decimals as bases. They calculate each value accurately, including expressions with negative bases and parentheses.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly convert between exponential form and repeated factors. They evaluate powers with positive, negative, fractional, and decimal bases, using parentheses and order of operations correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply the base by the exponent instead of using repeated multiplication. They may mishandle negative bases, especially when parentheses are missing. Fraction bases may be incorrectly evaluated by applying the exponent only to the numerator or denominator.

How to Assess It

Ask: Write (-3/4)(-3/4)(-3/4) using an exponent, then evaluate it and explain why the result is negative.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cards showing exponential expressions, repeated factors, and values; students physically sort each matching set and defend any unmatched card.

  2. Ask students to compare (-1/2)^4 and -(1/2)^4, then write an explanation of why the signs differ.

  3. Play exponent bingo: read a repeated product, and have students cover the matching exponential form or value.

  4. Model three years of 20 percent depreciation with 1000(0.8)^3, then calculate and interpret the final value.
