Georgia 6.PAR.6.4
The Standard
Evaluate expressions when given values for the variables, including expressions that arise in everyday situations.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Identify, write, evaluate, and interpret numerical and algebraic expressions as mathematical models to explain relevant situations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students replace variables with given numbers and calculate using the correct order of operations. They also connect the final value to the quantity described in a situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly replace each variable with its given value and follow the order of operations. They show clear steps, label the result, and explain its meaning in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read 3x as 3 + x instead of multiplication. They may ignore the order of operations or fail to use parentheses when substituting a negative number. Some give a number without explaining what it means in the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A gym visit costs C = 12.50 + 1.50v dollars, where v is the number of guests. Find C when v = 4 and explain the result.

Ways to Teach It
Use variable cards and number tiles to build 3x + 5, replace x with 4, then calculate the result.
Ask, “A taxi costs $4 plus $2 per mile. What does 4 + 2m mean when m = 3?” Students explain each step.
Play expression match: students pair expression cards with value cards and computed answer cards, earning a point only when all three match.
Use a grocery receipt to write and evaluate an expression for buying several identical items plus a fixed delivery fee.
