What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break a multi-term or factored expression into meaningful parts. They connect terms, factors, coefficients, constants, and variables to quantities in a given situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify terms, factors, coefficients, and constants in a formula or expression. They explain each part using quantities and units from the situation, including how the parts combine.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every number as a separate term, even when it is a coefficient or part of a factor. They may describe operations without explaining what each part represents in the situation.

How to Assess It

Give students the formula C = 25 + 8h for a bike rental. Ask them to explain 25, 8h, and the full expression in context.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards showing expressions and situations, then have them match each term or factor to its meaning and unit.

  2. Ask students to explain how 12, 4n, and 12 + 4n differ in a concert ticket pricing situation.

  3. Play expression detective, where teams earn points by correctly naming and interpreting a highlighted term, coefficient, constant, or factor.

  4. Compare two phone plans using 30 + 5g and 45 + 3g, then interpret each number and variable in context.
