What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students rewrite algebraic expressions using operation properties and by combining like terms. They explain why two forms are equivalent and what the terms, coefficients, constants, or factors mean in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can simplify, expand, or factor an expression and name the property they used. They can explain how each term or factor connects to a given situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rewrite 3(x + 4) as 3x + 4, distributing only to the first term. They may combine unlike terms, such as 2x + 5 becoming 7x. Some think expressions with different forms cannot represent the same quantity.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Four students each buy a $6 ticket and s dollars of snacks. Show why 4(s + 6) and 4s + 24 represent the same total, then explain what 24 represents.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs algebra tiles to model 3(x + 2), then rearrange the tiles to show 3x + 6.
Ask students which form, 5n + 20 or 5(n + 4), better shows total cost, then defend their choice.
Play an expression match game using cards with equivalent expanded, factored, and simplified forms.
Have students write and compare two expressions for a taxi fare with a fixed fee and a per-mile charge.
