Expectations in This Standard
5.MDR.7 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 5.MDR.7.1
Explore realistic problems involving different units of measurement, including distance, mass, weight, volume, and time.
- 5.MDR.7.2
Ask questions and answer them based on gathered information, observations, and appropriate graphical displays to solve problems relevant to everyday life.
- 5.MDR.7.3
Convert among units within the metric system and then apply these conversions to solve multistep, practical problems.
- 5.MDR.7.4
Convert among units within relative sizes of measurement units within the customary measurement system.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve one-step and multi-step problems with customary units, metric units, and elapsed time. They read graphs, compare values, and answer questions using scales, labels, and data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose suitable operations, convert units correctly, and label answers with the right unit. They read scales accurately and use graph data to find totals, differences, and comparisons.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse conversion factors or mix customary and metric units in one calculation. They may treat an hour as 100 minutes, skip graph intervals, or confuse totals with differences.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with a bar graph showing 1,500 mL, 2 L, and 2,250 mL. Ask students to find the total in milliliters and explain how the graph supports their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure a book in inches and centimeters, weigh a bag, and record results in a table.
Show a line graph of daily temperatures and ask, “Which two days had the greatest change, and how do you know?”
Play a matching game using cards with measurement problems, converted values, elapsed times, and graph-based answers.
Have students plan a class picnic schedule, calculate travel and activity times, and graph the amount of water needed by group.
