What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather or examine data from measurements, observations, or time records. They turn a real situation into questions that the data can answer. They use a suitable graph and calculations to support each response.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students pose a clear question that can be answered with the available data. They read labels and scales accurately, compare values, and show any needed calculations. Their conclusion answers the question and uses evidence from the graph.

Common Misconceptions

Students may pose opinion questions that the data cannot answer. They may misread graph scales, compare the wrong categories, or make claims without citing values. Some choose a graph type that hides useful comparisons.

How to Assess It

Show a bar graph of five students’ reading times. Ask students to write one question the graph can answer, solve it, and cite two values as evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students measure classroom objects in centimeters, make a line plot, then write and answer two questions using the measurements.

  2. Display a graph of daily screen time and ask, “Which question can this graph answer, and what values support your response?”

  3. Play Graph Detective by matching prepared question cards with graph cards, then calculating and checking each answer with a partner.

  4. Track cafeteria food waste for five days, graph the amounts, and write one recommendation supported by the collected data.
