What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide what they want to find out, collect class data, and organize it in a picture graph or bar graph. They use the display to compare groups, find totals, and explain conclusions that fit the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize collected information in a labeled picture graph or bar graph. They can compare groups, find totals or differences, and support an answer with numbers from the display.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count each picture as one even when the key gives it a different value. They may confuse the largest group with the total or make a claim based on personal opinion instead of the display.
How to Assess It
- Give students a bar graph showing 8 walkers, 5 bus riders, and 3 car riders. Ask how many more students walk than ride in cars, then have them write one different question the graph can answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student a sticky note, survey favorite recess activities, build a class graph, and compare the two most popular choices.
Show a picture graph and ask, “What claim can you make, and which numbers support it?”
Play Graph Detective: pairs draw question cards, answer from a prepared graph, and earn a point for citing data.
Track one week of classroom weather, graph the results, and decide which type of clothing was needed most often.
