Georgia 3.MDR.5.1
The Standard
Ask questions and answer them based on gathered information, observations, and appropriate graphical displays to solve problems relevant to everyday life.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve real-life, mathematical problems involving length, liquid volume, mass, and time and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions that can be answered using collected information, observations, or graphs. They read the data, compare values, and use the results to solve everyday problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write a question the data can answer, read values and scales accurately, and choose any needed operation. They explain their answer with labels, units, or a comparison tied to the display.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask questions that cannot be answered with the displayed data. They may ignore the graph scale, confuse labels with values, or give answers without units or evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a bar graph showing walking times: Monday 15 minutes, Tuesday 25, Wednesday 20, and Thursday 10. Ask them to write one answerable question, answer it, and show their reasoning.

Ways to Teach It
Students measure the mass of four classroom objects, record results, make a bar graph, then write and answer two comparison questions.
Show two graphs of the same recess survey and ask, “Which display makes comparisons easier, and what evidence supports your choice?”
Play Graph Detective: teams draw question cards, locate evidence on a graph, and earn a point only when the answer includes units.
Use a weekly weather chart to ask which day had the most rainfall and how much more fell than on the driest day.
