What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop questions about familiar situations, collect or observe data, and display it with an appropriate graph. They use the graph to solve problems, compare values, and explain conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students pose a clear question, gather relevant data, and organize it in a suitable graph. They read labels and scales accurately, compare values, and support answers with graph evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a graph that does not fit the data or read the scale as counting by ones. They may report the largest category without using evidence to answer the question.
How to Assess It
- Give students a bar graph of five classmates’ reading minutes. Ask, “How many more minutes did Ana read than Jay, and what graph evidence proves it?”

Ways to Teach It
Have groups survey classmates’ travel times to school, record responses with tally marks, and create a scaled bar graph.
Show two graphs of the same data and ask students to write which graph communicates the results more clearly and why.
Play Graph Detective by giving pairs data cards and question cards to match, solve, and justify using labels, scales, and values.
Track daily cafeteria food waste for one week, graph the amounts, and identify which day had the least waste.
