Georgia 5.MDR.7.1
The Standard
Explore realistic problems involving different units of measurement, including distance, mass, weight, volume, and time.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve problems involving customary measurements, metric measurements, and time and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve realistic problems involving length, mass, weight, volume, and elapsed time. They choose suitable units, convert when needed, and explain whether their answers make sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose sensible units and tools, label measurements, and convert compatible units correctly. They solve one-step and multistep problems and check whether answers fit the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix units in one calculation without converting them first. They often reverse conversion operations, treat time as base ten, or confuse mass, weight, and volume.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A 5-kilometer walk is 2,750 meters complete. How many meters remain? Show your conversion.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a meter stick, balance, measuring cup, and stopwatch; students measure objects and solve one posted problem at each.
Ask students to explain which unit they would use to measure a backpack, hallway, water bottle, and soccer practice.
Play a matching game where students pair equivalent measurement cards, then use each matched pair to solve a short word problem.
Give students package labels with dimensions and weight limits, then have them decide which objects can be shipped together.
