Expectations in This Standard
2.NR.3 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 2.NR.3.1
Determine whether a group (up to 20) has an odd or even number of objects. Write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
- 2.NR.3.2
Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as...

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students model groups that have the same number of objects. They use objects, drawings, skip counting, or repeated addition to find and explain the total.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students build or draw equal groups from a story and identify the number of groups and the amount in each. They find the total using repeated addition, skip counting, or counting all objects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the number of groups with the number in each group. They may call groups equal when the amounts differ or count only the groups instead of all objects.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “There are 4 baskets with 3 oranges in each basket. Draw the groups, write an addition equation, and find the total.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students counters and paper plates, then have them model 5 plates with 4 counters on each and record the total.
Show 3 bags with 6 apples each and ask, “How could you find the total without counting every apple one by one?”
Students roll two number cubes, build that many groups and objects per group, then write the matching repeated addition equation.
Have students arrange 20 classroom pencils equally in 5 cups, then state the number of cups, pencils per cup, and total.
