What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students prepare for reading by looking at pictures, naming what they know, and making a prediction. During reading, they ask questions and adjust their thinking. After reading, they retell, discuss, or draw what they understood.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student previews pictures, listens closely, and asks or answers questions during reading. Afterward, the student retells key events or shares the main idea. The student names a picture, word, or event that supports the response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from pictures without checking the words or story events. They may think good readers understand everything immediately. Some retell every detail instead of naming the main events or idea.

How to Assess It

Read a new picture book page aloud, then ask, “What do you think is happening, and what helped you understand?” Look for one clear idea supported by words or pictures.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards from a familiar story to sequence, then have them explain how each card helped them understand the plot.

  2. Pause during a read-aloud and ask, “What are you wondering now, and what in the story made you wonder that?”

  3. Play Stop, Think, Show, pausing a read-aloud so students display prediction, question, or connection cards and explain their choice.

  4. Read a classroom sign or lunch menu together, then ask students which words and pictures help them know what to do.
