What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share what they already know before reading or listening. They compare those ideas with the text, notice new or conflicting information, and revise their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name something they knew and something the text taught them. They can point to a picture or sentence that confirmed or changed their thinking.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every personal connection as relevant, even when it does not help explain the text. They may hold onto an earlier idea after the text gives different information.
How to Assess It
- Read a short nonfiction page. Ask, “What did you know before, what did you learn, and did any idea change?”

Ways to Teach It
After a read-aloud, students sort picture cards into two hoops labeled “I knew” and “I learned.”
Ask, “What did you think before reading, and what do you think now?” Students answer orally or draw both ideas.
Play Fact Detective by reading clues from the text while students match each clue to a prior idea or new learning card.
Observe the playground weather, read a simple weather book, then compare the book’s facts with what students saw outside.
