What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students bring relevant background knowledge and assumptions to a text. They compare those ideas with textual evidence, resolve conflicts when possible, and update what they know.

What Mastery Looks Like

Before reading, a student names relevant knowledge or assumptions. After reading, the student cites passages that confirm, complicate, or correct those ideas and identifies any remaining questions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat prior knowledge as automatically correct or focus only on evidence that confirms it. They may notice a conflict but fail to revise their thinking or identify what remains unknown.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one belief you brought to today’s text, quote one detail that confirmed or challenged it, and explain your revised understanding.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sticky notes to mark confirmed knowledge, contradictions, and new learning in a short article, then revise one original belief.

  2. After reading, write: What did you expect, what challenged that expectation, and which passage changed or expanded your thinking?

  3. Play Evidence Match: teams pair prior-knowledge statements with confirming, complicating, or correcting quotations, then defend each match.

  4. Compare a social media claim about teen sleep with a research excerpt, noting what changed in your understanding and why.
