What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students bring relevant background knowledge and assumptions to a text. They compare those ideas with textual evidence, resolve conflicts when possible, and update what they know.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Before reading, a student names relevant knowledge or assumptions. After reading, the student cites passages that confirm, complicate, or correct those ideas and identifies any remaining questions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat prior knowledge as automatically correct or focus only on evidence that confirms it. They may notice a conflict but fail to revise their thinking or identify what remains unknown.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name one belief you brought to today’s text, quote one detail that confirmed or challenged it, and explain your revised understanding.
