What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect what they already know to ideas and evidence in a text. They notice conflicts or missing information and revise their thinking. They add accurate new learning to what they know.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how a text confirms, extends, or challenges something they already knew. They point to specific evidence, identify unanswered questions, and revise inaccurate ideas.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat prior beliefs as facts, even when the text gives different evidence. They may ignore contradictions or fill gaps with guesses. Some collect new facts without connecting them to what they already know.

How to Assess It

After reading a short paragraph, have students complete three lines: “I knew...,” “The text changed or challenged...,” and “I still need to find out....”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students sort sticky notes into “already knew,” “new learning,” “conflict,” and “question,” then connect each note to a marked passage.

  2. Ask students to write: “What did the text confirm, challenge, or leave unanswered, and which sentence caused that change?”

  3. Play Evidence Referee: teams hear a claim, find text evidence that confirms or challenges it, and earn points for explaining the match.

  4. Students read a nutrition label, list assumptions about the food, then revise those assumptions using details from the label.
