What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name why they are reading and choose one simple goal. They notice when meaning breaks down and try a way to fix it. They check whether they met their goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Before reading, a student states a clear reason and one simple goal. During reading, the student notices confusion and tries rereading, using a picture clue, or asking for help. After reading, the student says whether the goal was met.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the only goal is to finish the book. They may keep reading when a word or event does not make sense. They may use only pictures instead of rereading or asking for help.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a short picture book. Ask, "Why will you read this, what is your goal, and what will you do if something is confusing?"

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs choose a picture book and a purpose card, then place a sticky note where they met the goal.
Before a read-aloud, ask, "Are we reading for fun or to learn, and what will we find out?"
Play Stop and Fix: pause at a confusing page, and students point to reread, picture clue, or ask for help.
Read a classroom snack label to find one ingredient, then check whether the label answered the question.
