What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Before reading, students state what they need to learn, find, or notice. While reading, they pause to check understanding and use a specific action when the text stops making sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student sets a specific target before reading and checks progress while reading. When meaning breaks down, the student rereads, uses context, asks a question, or summarizes, then explains what became clearer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a reading goal is simply finishing the assigned pages. They may highlight everything, ignore confusion, or keep reading without trying a different approach.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph. Ask them to write their reading target, mark one confusing point, and name the action they used to clarify it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a one-page article and three sticky-note colors: green for goal, yellow for confusion, blue for the strategy that fixed it.

  2. Have students answer three questions: Where did understanding break down, what did you try, and how did the text become clearer?

  3. Play Strategy Switch: pause during a shared reading, draw a card labeled reread, summarize, question, or use context, then apply it.

  4. Read a bus schedule to find the last route home, then identify and repair confusion about times, stops, or symbols.
