What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Before reading, students decide what they need to learn or understand from a text. As they read, they check whether the text makes sense and change tactics when it does not.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names a clear reason for reading and checks progress at useful points. When meaning breaks down, the student uses a fitting tactic, such as rereading, annotating, summarizing, or checking context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat finishing the pages as the goal, even when they cannot explain the text. They may keep rereading without changing tactics or mistake unfamiliar vocabulary for complete confusion.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph and ask them to state their reading goal, underline one confusing part, apply a repair strategy, and explain what became clearer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a short article, sticky notes, and three colored tabs to mark their goal, confusion points, and strategy changes.

  2. Ask students to write: What are you trying to learn, where did meaning break down, and what did you do next?

  3. Run Strategy Switch: pause a projected passage at set points, then teams choose reread, annotate, summarize, or ask a question.

  4. Have students read a driver's permit page for one needed fact, then explain how their approach changed when the first search failed.
