What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice unfamiliar words during listening and reading. They use the sentence, pictures, classroom vocabulary, and familiar word parts to suggest a meaning and explain their clue.

What Mastery Looks Like

During a read-aloud or shared reading, students suggest a meaning that fits the sentence and picture. They point to a specific clue or familiar word part and revise their idea when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the picture without checking the sentence. They may repeat the sentence instead of explaining the word, or assume a familiar word part gives the whole meaning.

How to Assess It

Read, “Mia was unhappy when her block tower fell.” Ask students to circle sad or glad, underline the clue, and explain what un- means.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place smooth and rough objects in bags; students feel one, hear a clue sentence, and choose the word that matches.

  2. Read a page with an unfamiliar word and ask, “What might it mean, and which picture, sentence, or word part helped?”

  3. Play Word Detective: teams match simple clue sentences to meaning cards, then name the clue they used.

  4. During morning routines, pause at words like attendance or calendar and connect each word to the action or object it names.
