What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work out unfamiliar words by using nearby sentences, pictures, familiar academic words, and meaningful word parts. They explain which clues helped and check whether the meaning makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify useful clues near an unfamiliar word and recognize familiar base words, prefixes, or suffixes. They explain the meaning in their own words and reread to check that it fits.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first clue they notice without checking the whole sentence. They may confuse a base word with its changed form or choose a meaning that does not fit the passage.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Mia reread the directions because she misunderstood the task. What does misunderstood mean? Underline a context clue, circle its word parts, and explain.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs prefix, base-word, and suffix cards; have them build words, match each to a picture, and explain the meaning.

  2. Read a short paragraph using “observe,” then ask, “Which nearby words help you explain observe, and how do they help?”

  3. Play Context Clue Detective: teams underline a clue, split the target word into parts, and choose the meaning that fits.

  4. Examine a recycling label with “reusable” and “nonrecyclable”; students use pictures and word parts to explain each label.
