What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work out unfamiliar words and ideas by using definitions, examples, contrasts, and other clues in nearby sentences. They also break academic words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a grade-level passage, students can explain an unfamiliar word or idea in their own words. They point to useful context and word parts, then show why their meaning fits the passage.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first familiar meaning of a word, even when it does not fit the passage. They may rely on one nearby word and ignore stronger clues across sentences. They may recognize a prefix or root but apply its meaning incorrectly.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Lena misinterpreted the directions, so she completed the wrong problem.” Ask students to define misinterpreted, mark its word parts, and underline a supporting clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs prefix, root, and suffix cards to build words, then match each word to a context sentence.

  2. Display a short paragraph and ask, “Which clue best explains the bold word, and why is it stronger than the others?”

  3. Play Context Clue Bingo by reading sentences aloud while students cover matching meanings and explain one choice.

  4. Read a school notice together and infer words such as prohibited or optional from nearby details and word parts.
