What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work out unfamiliar words and ideas by reading the surrounding sentence or passage. They also use known academic words, roots, prefixes, and suffixes to build meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students give a reasonable meaning for an unfamiliar word or concept. They point to context clues or meaningful word parts and explain how those clues support their answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar meaning that does not fit the sentence. They may treat every beginning or ending as a prefix or suffix, or rely on only one clue.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: "The hikers were fearless during the difficult climb. What does fearless mean? Circle one context clue and explain how -less helps."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with one bold word, then have them underline context clues and build the word with prefix, root, and suffix cards.

  2. Ask, "What does transported mean here, and which words or word parts prove it?" Students write and share a two-sentence explanation.

  3. Play Clue Detective: teams earn one point for a likely meaning and one point for naming the context clue or word part.

  4. Use an unfamiliar word from science directions, and have students annotate the clues they would use before reaching for a dictionary.
