What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students preview a book or page before reading it closely. They notice features such as titles, pictures, labels, and headings, then choose where to look for needed information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly look across a page or book before reading closely. They use titles, pictures, labels, headings, and page sections to choose where useful information may be found.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin reading every word instead of previewing the page. They may also choose a section because of its size or color rather than its connection to their question.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture book and ask, “Where would you look to find out where the story happens?” Have them point and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a picture book and sticky notes, then have them mark the title, pictures, labels, and one useful page.
Show two pages and ask, “Which page would help us learn what the animal eats, and what clue helped you choose?”
Play Page Detective by naming a fact to find and having students race to point to the most useful picture, label, or section.
Use a classroom lunch menu and ask students to locate the day, meal, and drink without reading every item.
