What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students look over a text before reading it closely. They use headings, pictures, labels, and sections to decide where helpful information is likely to be.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly locate a likely page or section without reading the whole text. They use headings, pictures, labels, and other page features to explain where useful information may be found.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin reading every word instead of previewing the page. They may choose a section because of an interesting picture, even when it does not match their purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students a simple nonfiction book and ask, “Where would you look to learn what this animal eats?” Have them point and explain their choice.

Show two pages and ask, “Which page would help us learn where frogs live, and what clue helped you choose?”
Play Find It Fast by naming a topic and having students point to the most useful page feature within ten seconds.
Use a school lunch menu and ask students to quickly find the day when pizza is served.
