What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students preview a text before reading it closely. They use headings, captions, diagrams, bold words, and sections to decide where useful information is likely to be.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly locate the section most likely to answer a question. They point to a heading, caption, diagram, bold word, or other feature that guided their choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read every word instead of previewing the page. They may choose a section because it is first or has a picture, without checking headings, captions, or labels.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page article with headings, captions, and a diagram. Ask, “Which section would help you find how the animal stays safe, and what clue helped you choose?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article and sticky notes, then have them label the heading, caption, diagram, and section most useful for one question.
Ask students to write, “I would look in ___ because ___,” using a heading or text feature as evidence.
Play Section Search by showing a question and awarding a point to teams that locate and explain the best section within thirty seconds.
Use a printed zoo webpage and have students locate ticket prices, hours, rules, and the map without reading every word.
