What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell the main event or idea from a short part of a text in their own words. They form a mental picture and use text details to explain or draw it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can give a brief, accurate account after hearing one part of a text. Their drawing includes characters, actions, or details that match that section.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat every detail instead of naming the main event or idea. They may add details from their own experience that were not in the text. Some draw one object without showing what happened in the section.
How to Assess It
- Read a short paragraph aloud, then ask, “What happened in this part?” Have students answer in one sentence and draw the scene they pictured.

Ways to Teach It
Read one page, then have students arrange character and action cards to show what happened before drawing the scene.
Ask partners, “What did you picture while listening, and which words helped you picture it?”
Play Stop, Sketch, Say by pausing during a read-aloud for students to draw and give a one-sentence summary.
Read picture directions for washing hands, then have students picture, act out, and retell the steps in order.
