What Students Need to Do: Students pause at logical breaks and state the key point in their own words. They create a quick mental or drawn image of events, relationships, settings, or processes to track meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can reduce a dense passage to an accurate one or two sentence summary without copying or adding opinions. The student can sketch or describe a useful image and explain how it clarifies meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students often retell every detail, copy sentences, or mistake a personal reaction for a summary. They may use decorative drawings instead of showing sequence, relationships, tone, or cause and effect.
How to Assess It: Give students a 250-word unfamiliar passage. After each paragraph, have them write a ten-word summary, add one labeled sketch, and cite a supporting detail.

Lesson moves

Cut a complex article into sections; groups arrange them, write a sticky-note summary for each, and add a simple labeled sketch.
Ask, “Which image best captures the turning point, and which words in the passage support your choice?”
Play Summary Relay: teams read one section, pass a 12-word summary forward, then compare the final chain with the original.
Use assembly instructions or an emergency procedure; students summarize each step and draw a sequence diagram another group must follow.
