What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pause after a paragraph or short section and state the main event or idea in their own words. They create a mental picture from text details and use it to notice confusion or gaps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a brief summary that includes the main event or idea and the most useful details. The student describes or sketches an accurate mental picture and rereads when something does not make sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences or retell every detail instead of selecting the main idea and key details. They may draw from imagination without using text evidence, or think visualization only works with stories.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage of about 100 words. Prompt: “Write one sentence telling what matters most, then draw the scene and label two details from the text.”

Ways to Teach It
Read a short scene, pause after each paragraph, and have students arrange paper character and setting cards to show what changed.
Ask, “Which words shaped your mental picture, and which details belong in a two-sentence summary?”
Play Summary Shrink: partners retell a section in 20 words, then 10 words, while keeping the main idea and key details.
Give students a recipe step, then have them sketch it and explain the step without looking back at the text.
