What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Kindergarten students speak to a person or group for a clear reason. They choose words, volume, details, gestures, and pictures that fit their listeners.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can share an idea, story, or direction so the listener understands. The student adjusts volume, word choice, details, and pictures for a classmate, adult, or group.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think speaking louder always makes a presentation better. They may use the same words for classmates, younger children, and adults, or let a picture do all the explaining.

How to Assess It

Ask each student: “Explain how to line up first to a new classmate, then to the principal.” Listen for clear speech and audience-based changes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs audience and purpose cards, then have them use a classroom object to plan and give a short presentation.

  2. Ask, “How would you invite a friend to play, and how would you ask a teacher for help?” Discuss what changes.

  3. Play Audience Switch, where students repeat one message for a friend, a younger child, and the principal.

  4. Have students record a short classroom announcement reminding families about an upcoming event, using clear words and an appropriate voice.
