What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver presentations for a clear purpose and a specific group of listeners. They choose words, details, tone, delivery, and visuals that fit those listeners.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students adjust their words, examples, tone, pace, volume, and visuals for a named audience. They can explain how their choices help them inform, persuade, or entertain listeners.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give the same talk to every audience or confuse purpose with topic. They may add busy visuals, use unfamiliar words, or read slides without considering what listeners need.
How to Assess It
- Assign a one-minute talk about a school rule for new third graders. Check whether the student uses clear words, relevant details, an appropriate tone, and one helpful visual.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs audience and purpose cards, then have them revise the same three-slide talk for two different combinations.
Ask students to write how a recycling talk should change for kindergarteners, classmates, and the school board.
Play Audience Detective, where students deliver short talks and classmates identify the intended audience and purpose from the speaker’s choices.
Have students create a morning announcement that persuades classmates to attend a real school event.
