What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely during a presentation and ask questions that connect to what the speaker said. They answer audience questions clearly and respond to follow-up questions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student asks specific questions connected to the speaker’s ideas. The student gives clear, accurate answers and adds details when the audience needs clarification.

Common Misconceptions

Students may offer comments instead of questions, ask about unrelated details, or repeat a question already answered. Speakers may give one-word replies or avoid the question. Some students forget to ask a follow-up when an answer is unclear.

How to Assess It

Pair students for 30-second book recommendations. Each student asks one relevant question after listening and answers one question with a clear detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. In teams, build a paper tower, explain one design choice, then take two audience questions and answer with details from the build.

  2. After a classmate shares a claim about a novel, write one clarifying question and one follow-up question, then discuss the answers.

  3. Play Question Ladder: draw who, what, why, or how cards, ask about a one-minute talk, and award points for relevant responses.

  4. Hold a mock school board meeting about a new playground rule, with student speakers presenting proposals and classmates questioning each proposal.
