What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to, learn, and recite a short, meaningful poem or part of a speech. They speak clearly and show basic understanding of the words and context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can recite the assigned passage with mostly accurate words and sequence. The student uses a clear voice and can explain the passage’s main idea in simple terms.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think reciting means speaking quickly or loudly. They may skip repeated lines, mix up the order, or say words without understanding their meaning.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to recite four assigned lines, then answer, “What is one idea in these lines?” Check word order, clear speech, and understanding.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards for each line of a four-line poem, then have them order the cards, point, and recite.
After hearing a brief speech excerpt, ask, “Who said these words, and what did the speaker want people to remember?”
Play Line Leader: the teacher says the first line, one student says the next, and the class continues through the passage.
Practice a short welcome poem, then recite it for visiting families or another kindergarten class and explain its message.
