What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into roots and affixes, then use context and reference tools to confirm meaning. They apply newly learned words accurately in speaking and writing for different audiences and purposes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how a root, affix, or context clue supports a word’s meaning. They can confirm the meaning with a reference source and use the word accurately for a clear audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one context clue without checking word parts or the whole passage. They may confuse a familiar root with the word’s full meaning or use a new word in the wrong tone.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with one unfamiliar word in a short passage. Students mark useful word parts or context clues, define the word, and use it accurately in a new sentence.
