What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and phrases that express an exact meaning. They use each choice correctly in a sentence and revise vague wording.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a vague sentence, students can identify which word needs work and replace it with a more exact word or phrase. They can explain how the replacement fits its grammatical role and improves meaning, tone, or clarity.

Common Misconceptions

Students may pile on adjectives and adverbs instead of choosing a stronger noun or verb. They may label a word by appearance rather than its job, or choose a synonym that changes the intended tone.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise “The dog went across the yard” by replacing “went” and adding one precise modifier. Label each new word’s part of speech.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards labeled noun, verb, adjective, and adverb, then have them build and revise three sentences for precision.

  2. Write: “How does changing the verb in a sentence change the picture a reader forms?” Support your answer with two revisions.

  3. Play a sentence-revision relay where teams replace vague words, label each replacement’s part of speech, and justify the strongest choice.

  4. Have students revise a vague school announcement into clear directions using exact nouns, strong verbs, and carefully chosen modifiers.
