What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how different parts of speech function in a sentence. They use that knowledge to replace vague or awkward wording with precise choices that fit the meaning and tone.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can spot weak nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in a draft. They replace them with accurate words that fit the sentence, meaning, and tone. They can explain why each change improves the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a longer or rarer word is always more precise. They may choose the right meaning but use the wrong form, such as an adjective instead of an adverb. They may also treat synonyms as interchangeable without checking tone or context.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise, “The really big dog went quickly toward the loud car.” Underline each replacement, label its part of speech, and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs noun, verb, adjective, and adverb cards to swap into vague sentences, then have them justify the best grammatical fit.

  2. Ask students to revise, “The person did something bad,” then compare how specific word choices change meaning and tone.

  3. Play Precision Relay, where teams replace one vague word in each sentence and label the replacement’s part of speech.

  4. Have students revise a vague school announcement so readers know exactly what happened, where it happened, and what action to take.
