What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use sentence structure to decide which form of a word fits a specific job. They choose and revise words so their writing is clear, exact, and effective.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select the correct noun, verb, adjective, or adverb form for a sentence. They replace vague or awkward wording with choices that improve meaning, tone, and flow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a related word with the wrong form, such as using an adjective where an adverb is needed. They may also mistake longer words for stronger words or rely on vague verbs and repeated modifiers.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The committee made a quick decision about the proposal.” Ask them to revise it with a precise verb and explain the verb’s role.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word-family cards, such as decide, decision, decisive, and decisively, then have them build and label four correct sentences.
Ask students to compare two revisions of a sentence and explain which word choices better fit the meaning and tone.
Play a revision relay where teams replace vague verbs and weak modifiers, earning points for grammatical fit and precision.
Examine a job posting or news headline, then revise three word choices to make the message clearer and more precise.
