What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose words that serve the right grammatical job and express an exact meaning. They revise drafts by replacing vague, weak, or awkward words with better choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that fit the intended meaning, tone, and sentence structure. They revise vague or repetitive wording without changing the writer’s main idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a sophisticated word that does not fit the sentence’s grammar or meaning. They may overuse adjectives and adverbs instead of selecting stronger nouns and verbs.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The athlete went quickly across the field.” Ask them to replace “went quickly” and explain why their verb is more precise.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to replace vague nouns, verbs, and modifiers in five sentences, then compare how each change affects meaning.
Ask students to revise a dull paragraph for a serious or humorous tone, then explain three word choices to a partner.
Play a verb upgrade relay where teams replace weak verbs in projected sentences and earn points for precision and grammatical fit.
Compare wording in a job posting and a social media ad, then rewrite one sentence to better suit each audience.
