What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use their knowledge of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and other word classes to make deliberate word choices. They revise vague or awkward wording for clearer meaning and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students replace vague nouns, weak verbs, and unnecessary modifiers with exact choices. They can explain how each word functions in the sentence and why it fits the meaning and tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a word’s part of speech with its position in a sentence. They may also choose longer words that sound impressive but make the meaning less clear.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “The person went quickly into the room.” Ask them to replace three words, label each replacement’s part of speech, and explain how it improves precision.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to sort by part of speech, then use selected cards to revise three vague sentences.
Ask students to compare “She walked into class” with three revised versions and explain how verb choices change tone.
Play a sentence revision relay where teams replace one underlined word with a more precise word from the same part of speech.
Have students revise a vague school announcement so its nouns, verbs, and modifiers give readers clear directions.
