What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine whether an unfamiliar or flexible word acts as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or another word type. They use that role to infer its meaning in the sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify how a word functions in a sentence. They use that function and surrounding clues to explain the word or phrase in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a familiar word keeps the same meaning in every sentence. They may confuse a word’s part of speech with its meaning or rely only on nearby definitions.
How to Assess It
- Give students two sentences using “light,” once as a noun and once as an adjective. Ask them to label each use and explain its meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and word cards, then have them sort each highlighted word by its job and meaning.
Ask students to explain how “record” changes in “play the record” and “record the score,” citing sentence clues.
Play a context relay where teams label a highlighted word’s part of speech and choose its correct meaning.
Collect headlines, ads, or signs with flexible words such as “back” or “clean,” then compare each word’s job and meaning.
