What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether an unfamiliar word acts as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or another grammatical form. They combine that role with context clues to infer meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify how an unfamiliar word functions in a sentence. They use that grammatical role and nearby clues to give a reasonable meaning and explain their thinking.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a word ending always reveals its part of speech. They may also think a word keeps the same grammatical role and meaning in every sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “After hours on the trail, the hikers trudged toward camp.” Ask them to identify “trudged” as a verb and explain its likely meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with highlighted words to sort by grammatical role, then have students infer each word’s meaning from its sentence.
Ask students to compare “I broke the record” and “Please record the song,” then explain how each grammatical role changes the meaning.
Play Part-of-Speech Detective by displaying sentences and awarding points for naming a highlighted word’s role and inferring its meaning.
Have students examine unfamiliar words in menus, product labels, or headlines and explain how each word’s grammatical job helps clarify meaning.
