What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how an unfamiliar word functions in a sentence, such as noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. They combine that grammatical role with nearby clues to infer a meaning that fits.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a challenging sentence, students can name the word’s part of speech and explain which sentence features reveal it. They propose a precise meaning, substitute a synonym, and show that the sentence remains grammatical and logical.

Common Misconceptions

Students often name a part of speech from a word’s usual dictionary use rather than its job in the sentence. They may treat endings like -ly as foolproof, or choose a meaning that fits the topic but not the grammar.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In “Malik gave the form a perfunctory glance before signing it,” identify perfunctory’s part of speech, infer its meaning, and cite two clues.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips and word cards, then have them place each word, name its grammatical role, and explain its likely meaning.

  2. Ask students to explain how the meaning of “fast” changes in “a fast car,” “drive fast,” and “a three-day fast.”

  3. Play Context Clue Relay, where teams identify a highlighted word’s function, infer its meaning, and replace it with a fitting synonym.

  4. Have students annotate unfamiliar words in a job posting, using each word’s sentence role to explain what the employer expects.
