What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how an unfamiliar or flexible word works in a sentence, such as a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. They use that job, sentence structure, and nearby clues to choose the intended meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can label the word’s grammatical role and explain which sentence features reveal it. The student chooses a fitting definition and rejects definitions that do not fit the grammar.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition they know. They may label a word by its usual use instead of its job in the given sentence. They may rely on nearby topic words while ignoring endings, placement, and syntax.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In “The judge tried to temper her criticism with praise,” identify temper’s part of speech, define it, and name one grammar clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of sentence strips using one word in different roles, then have students mark the role and match each sentence to a definition.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how “The permit permits entry” changes meaning when the same word moves from noun to verb.

  3. Play a context relay where teams label a highlighted word’s role, choose its meaning, and justify both before earning a point.

  4. Compare headlines using “record,” “impact,” or “address” in different grammatical roles, then rewrite each headline using a clear synonym.
