What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether an unfamiliar word acts as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or another part of speech. They use that role and the surrounding sentence to infer meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify how an unfamiliar word functions in a sentence. They use that role, word endings, and nearby clues to explain the word’s likely meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a word by its usual use rather than its role in the sentence. They may also rely only on nearby clues and ignore endings such as -ly, -tion, or -ous.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The coach questioned the fairness of the call.” Ask them to label “fairness” and explain how its role helps reveal its meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with one word used in different roles, then have students label each role and explain each meaning.
Ask students to explain how the meaning of “light” changes in “a light bag” and “light the candle.”
Play a context clue relay where teams label a highlighted word’s part of speech before choosing its meaning from three options.
Have students collect unfamiliar words from menus, ads, or signs, then use each word’s sentence role to infer its meaning.
