What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how a target word functions in a sentence, such as a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. They use that role and nearby clues to choose a meaning that fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify a word’s grammatical role and select a meaning that fits both the grammar and context. They can explain how the same word changes meaning when used as a different part of speech.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the most familiar definition without checking how the word works in the sentence. They may also confuse adjectives with adverbs or label words by suffix alone.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit prompt: “The coach fielded difficult questions after the loss.” Identify the part of speech and meaning of “fielded,” then explain your reasoning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips using one word in different roles, then have students sort, label, and define each use.
Ask students to explain how “light” changes in “a light bag,” “light the candle,” and “the light faded.”
Play a context relay where teams label a highlighted word’s part of speech before choosing its matching definition.
Collect headlines or advertisements with flexible words such as “target,” “book,” or “clean,” then identify each word’s role and intended meaning.
