What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work out unfamiliar words and phrases by examining context, roots, affixes, word relationships, and reference sources. They use the words accurately for different audiences and purposes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students combine context, roots, affixes, word relationships, and reference tools to confirm a meaning. They then use the word accurately, with the right form and tone for the audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on a single context clue or assume a familiar-looking root guarantees the meaning. They may also infer a rough meaning correctly but use the word with the wrong tone, form, or grammar.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “Rather than answer directly, the witness used circumlocution, talking around the question for several minutes.” Ask them to define the word, identify two clues, and use it in a formal sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups root, prefix, and suffix cards to build unfamiliar words, predict meanings, and verify each word in a dictionary.
Ask students to explain which clues best reveal a challenging word’s meaning and why another possible definition does not fit.
Run a word analysis relay where teams mark affixes, identify roots, infer meanings, and write accurate sentences.
Have students decode unfamiliar terms from a job posting, lease, or medical form, then rewrite each term in plain language.
