What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine Greek and Latin bases with prefixes and suffixes to make valid English words. They use each word in a sentence that fits its meaning, part of speech, and tone. They explain how the parts shape the full meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a root such as spect, a student can form inspection, retrospective, and spectator, then explain the contribution of each affix. The student uses the new words naturally and rejects combinations that are not accepted English words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may attach any familiar prefix or suffix to a base and assume the result is an accepted word. They may ignore spelling changes, treat bound roots like cred as standalone words, or use the right meaning with the wrong part of speech.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Using the root cred and any affixes, build one noun and one adjective. Define both from their parts and use each in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups prefix, root, and suffix cards; students assemble six valid words, define each, and write one accurate sentence.

  2. Ask students to explain how legal, illegal, illegality, and legalize differ in meaning, grammar, and the contexts where each fits.

  3. Run a word-building relay using roots such as cred, tract, and spect, awarding points only for valid words and accurate sentences.

  4. Students collect five words from a college application or job posting, mark the word parts, and use each in a new sentence.
