What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine Greek or Latin roots and base words with appropriate prefixes and suffixes to form valid words. They use the new words accurately in sentences and passages.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students build valid words by combining roots with suitable prefixes and suffixes. They explain how each part affects meaning and use the correct word form in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may attach any prefix or suffix to a root, even when the result is not a recognized word. They may also define a new word from its parts but use the wrong form or meaning in a sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students the root cred and the affixes in-, -ible, and -ity. Ask them to build two valid words, define each, and use each in a clear sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups root, prefix, and suffix cards to combine into valid words, then sort their words by noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.
Have students explain in writing how the meaning changes across act, react, action, active, and inactive.
Run a word-building relay where teams receive one root and earn points for valid words, accurate definitions, and correct sentences.
Ask students to find root-based words in news headlines, product labels, or school notices and explain how the word parts reveal meaning.
